Natural Deodorant: What the F works?
We’re tapping into more taboo topics generally avoided by most here on the blog guys. Sh*ts getting real. So, today we’re going to chat natural deodorant! So hawt right? You bet it is.
I’ve had a slew of peeps reach out to me about how to make the switch and avoid the stink. I am SO happy I’m getting these questions- keep them coming EVERYONE! Here’s what I can share about my journey going armpit au naturale…
Why I wanted to stop using conventional deodorant
I was a loyal Dove Go Fresh Cucumber scent user for as long as I can remember. Since the junior high days when I was just a scrawny under developed pre-teen with no chest whatsoever, sexual AF clear braces (oh yes), and absolutely no need for deodorant really. But regardless, it was considered cool to get into womanly stuff so I started slathering it on everyday. What I found out years later was that conventional deodorants like these “prevent” sweating by plugging up your pores in your armpits with nasty chemicals– of course. It always leads back to chemicals, doesn’t it? So, what’s the issue here besides the chemicals?
Well, our bodies were designed to eliminate toxins by sweating them out.
Sweating is good. But we’ve been trained to believe it is bad. Additionally, (and this was really the kicker for me), not to be gross buuuut… ever notice yellow-ish stains from sweat on white clothing? That’s not your sweat. It’s the chemical aluminum reacting to the sweat and showcasing it for all to see on your cute new summer wardrobe whites. Ya. If that’s what it does to your clothing, imagine what it’s doing to your body- to your skin, and bloodstream, and organs, etc etc etc etc times a million. Don’t worry, you won’t find this icky-ness in natural options.
When I made the switch + What I’ve tested over the last 3 Years
Here’s the thing. I’m just going to break it down and be honest- your body will have to adjust to your pores no longer getting clogged up by the chemical conventional deodorant anymore. Never fear- totally manageable. You just will need to apply more often than once a day to begin with. I’ve tested probably over 20 different deodorants from balms to salt rocks- all with sub par results. I know the feeling of standing in front of the personal care aisle at Whole Foods wanting to pick a less toxic replacement but overwhelmed with all the options out there nowadays. So I decided to Steve Jobs this up and give you guys just a couple simple product recommendations, like the limited iPhone options (plus or standard). This allows the brain not to get too stuck on looking at a million different choices, aka why the iPhone is our long lasting mobile King of choice. They keep it simple- ya feel me? KK, sorry back to deodorant. And the winners are…
HERO Combo
I always come back to Meow Meow Tweet. This natural deoderant brand has been amazing for me and others close to me. I personally love the Lavender Bergamot scent. Additionally, I just recently discovered the Kaia Charcoal Soap Deodorant Booster bar and saw even better results. This is a normal soap bar you can use all over your body in the shower but the charcoal is especially helpful for making natural deodorants more effective and really stick! I have been using it in conjunction with Meow Meow Tweet for about a month and half now and I’m obsessed. Also, side note- I would never recommend anything to you guys without trying it myself first. So this is as honest a review as it gets!
Must have extras
Plus, I also LOVE EO brand essential oil deodorant refresher sprays and wipes- especially the wipes. These are a lifesaver when you first make the switch. They are basically like a face wipe but for your armpits. I’m a lavender scent lover all the way- it’s my go to for these.
Final Tips
Keep in mind the cleaner stuff you consume and put into your body, the better your sweat will smell. Sometimes I don’t even have to wear deoderant, and can just use an essential oil for a natural perfume-esque musk.
That’s it! Now go forth AND let go of your fear of sweat. Was this helpful? What brands have worked for you all? I’d love to know in the comments below!
PS- You can always find even more of my nontoxic product recommendations in this post.
Cheers!
XOXO- Dani
